In the Canyon
Solo Flute / Field Recording / Improvisation
Album
In the Canyon is a collection of solo flute improvisations recorded outdoors in the early morning in Utah. Exploring the idea of a “nature duet,” the album captures a conversation between flute improvisations and the sounds of the surrounding environment. Wind, birds, bees, distant airplanes, and the natural acoustics of the canyon all become part of the music. Each piece captures a particular encounter between flute, place, and moment. Recorded with only a flute and a portable recorder, the recordings were later shaped into the final album in collaboration with producer Chuck Zwicky through the mixing process.
Nature Duet
A time capsule of life on earth in 2026
We live in a world of vibrations. The earth moves, the wind blows, birds sing, insects buzz, even light itself is the result of vibration. Humans use vibrations to express our thoughts and feelings, we absorb vibrations to understand the thoughts and feelings of others, but we are also surrounded by many ‘unintentional’ vibrations, we usually refer to them as ‘noise’, but like everything else, it’s only noise if we don’t understand it. Airplanes, Cars, Motorcycles, traffic. All so much noise. But what else is it? Vehicles announce our journeys. Contained in all that noise is so much hope, desire, optimism. These recordings represent a dialog with our planet as it is, a series of sonic landscape paintings from a single spot on the planet at a single point in time. A place you can visit any time you like at the press of a button. -Chuck Zwicky 2026
